Michigan Age Out Policy
The state of Michigan sets guidelines for the maximum age of a student while enrolled in public education (high school). The details of these guidelines are given in the State School Aid Act (MCL 388.1606) specifically in Section 6. A summary of these requirements are list below for general education students as well as special education students.

General Education Students:

General Education Students:
In order for a general education student to be enrolled in a public high school in the state of Michigan, all of the following requirement must be met:
- The student must be younger than 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year
- The student has not obtained a G.E.D certificate
- The student has not already obtained a high school diploma
- The student is less than 22 years old as of September 1 if:
- They had dropped out of high school for more than one year
- Is considered homeless AND
- Enrolling in a high school that focuses primarily on educating homeless students
Special Education Students:
In order for a special education student to be enrolled in a public high school in the state of Michigan, all of the following requirement must be met:
- The student must be receiving special education services at the high school they are attending
- The student has not obtained a G.E.D certificate
- The student has not already obtained a high school diploma
- The student must be younger than 26 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year
