How to Log Attendance
While inputting attendance is not required for our high school students, please note that LCs will get a notification of absence on the Parent Portal if attendance is not inputted for a certain day. The Online High School does capture class sessions and work, but that time will not populate in the attendance area under the Parent Portal, as the two attendance systems do not communicate with each other at this time.
What about sick days? Or days when something comes up?
Well, first of all, sick days are a little bit different in virtual school! :) Since your curriculum is available to you 24/7, we hope that at some point on a sick day you can log in and do at least a little bit of work. Getting behind here can happen quickly, and we definitely don't want that to happen to you!
However, we know that life does happen; in that case, you'll just need to make up later by watching recordings and completing classwork. If it is an extended illness or a hospitalization, please let your student's Homeroom teacher know asap, and we can help you with that.
Please email [email protected] any time there must be an absence. Any absence not reported will be considered unexcused*. Note: Only Learning Coaches can email about a student's absence.
Students must have a Vacation Contract on file if missing 3 or more consecutive school days. The Vacation Contract must be received at least one week before the first day of missing classes.
*You have 3 days to notify the school of an absence, otherwise it becomes Unexcused.

Age of Attendance According to the State of Michigan
Age of Attendance: The law in Michigan governing compulsory attendance requires a parent, legal guardian, or other person having control or charge of a child age six to sixteen to send the child to school during the entire school year, except under the limited circumstances specified in subsection (3) of section 380.1561. A child who was age eleven on or after December 1, 2009 or who was age eleven before that date and entered grade 6 in 2009 or later shall attend school from age six to eighteen. Penalty under Michigan Law is a 90-day Misdemeanor for violation of this section.
*Note: When students turn 18, they may drop out but still cannot qualify to take the GED until the class they were supposed to graduate with has graduated. MGLVA has options available other than dropping out, so please be sure to reach out to your counselor.
