What college should I dual enroll at?
You can dual enroll at any public college or university in Michigan. Tuition amounts are less for students that live in the college’s district/county. Most of our students attend a local 2-year community college as they tend to cost the least. If you attend a college outside your area, tuition may be more and the amount we cover may not be enough. College tuition amounts can be found on the college website.
Who pays for dual enrollment?
The amount covered by MGLVA is determined by the state of Michigan and changes slightly each year. The amount for 2023-2024 is $762.50 per class (not per credit). That is usually enough to cover tuition and books at community colleges, but not at four-year universities unless they have special rates for dual enrolled students. You can find that information on the college website on their dual enrollment page. If you have questions about tuition amounts, you can contact the college or the MGLVA Dual Enrollment Coordinator can help you.
How many dual enrollment classes can I take?
What happens if I fail a dual enrollment class?
If you fail a dual enrollment class or drop it after the drop/add deadline of the college, you will be responsible for reimbursing MGLVA for the cost of the class you failed.
**Please do not participate in dual enrollment unless you are committed to putting in the time and effort to do well.
What classes can I take through dual enrollment?
You can take just about any class you want. Some students like to take elective courses that we do not offer at MGLVA, such as psychology, computer class, or a world language that we don’t offer. Some students take general education classes that they know they will need in college. A good place to look for classes is on the Michigan Transfer Agreement. These are classes that will transfer easily to other Michigan colleges and universities. You can search for a college’s list of Michigan Transfer Agreement courses on their website, or you can search for the college you are interested in here: https://www.mitransfer.org/michigan-transfer-agreement.
How will dual enrollment affect my schedule at MGLVA?
Your MGLVA schedule will be reduced by the number of dual enrollment classes you take, for a total of 6. Students must have a minimum of ONE MGLVA course per semester. Example- if you have 2 dual enrollment classes, you will have 4 MGLVA classes.
Can a dual enrollment class replace a core class at MGLVA (English, Math, Science or Social Studies)?
While we prefer that students take their core classes at MGLVA, you may be able to replace a core class with a dual enrollment class. Examples of this would be 4th year math, or 3rd science credit. Contact the Dual Enrollment Coordinator for specific questions about replacing core classes.
Can I get high school and college credit for dual enrollment classes?
Yes. You can choose whether you want only college credit, or both college and high school credit for each dual enrollment class. That choice is made on the MGLVA Dual Enrollment Agreement form that is linked further down in this document. Keep in mind that you still have to have 22 credits at MGLVA to graduate.
